Official Tie-Breaking Rules
-
There are no overtime games
except for the playoff finals. In regular round-robin games, ties count
as one (1) point in the standings and the group winners are determined
by the highest number of points awarded in aggregate, for the
round-robin games, with two (2) points for a win and zero (0) points for
a loss.
-
If there is a tie for a
group, based on points, the tie is broken thusly, in order of priority,
on round-robin totals:
Case 1 – Two-way tie in
points for a group:
- Record between the two teams
- Greatest number of wins
- Greatest positive difference of goals for and
against
- Least total goals against
- Highest total of goals for
- Least amount of penalty minutes
- Sudden death playoff game of which the first team
to score will win. The time and place of the game will be agreed to
by the two teams and tournament organizers.
Case 2 – Three
or more teams tied for points in a group:
- Best record among the teams, including only those
games involving the tied teams
- Greatest number of wins
- Greatest positive difference of goals for and
against
- Least total goals against
- Highest total of goals for
- Least amount of penalty minutes
- If two remaining teams are still tied they will
play a mini-game of five minute periods starting at one hour, or as
soon as possible, after the round-robin games are over. If three or
more teams are still tied after applying these rules then the
mini-games will be played in a round-robin fashion. If there is
still a tie, the results of the mini games shall count as a
round-robin result and the above rules shall again be applied.
-
Teams will be placed
in a listed manner as follows, with the two top teams competing in a
playoff championship game,
which must end with a
winner:
- Most total points
- Greatest number of wins
- Greatest positive difference of goals for and
against
- Least total goals against
- Highest total of goals for
- Least amount of penalty minutes
- If there is still a tie among group winners, the
teams will be selected by the executive of the VBHA or their
designates, to be placed in a certain fashion to be determined by
the executive of the VBHA or their designates for the purpose of the
playoff pairings.
